Ross Keat (Partner)
Mr. Keat completed his BDS in 2013 at Bristol University, UK, obtaining distinction in a postgraduate certificate of Business and Management in 2015 with the University of Essex. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians Glasgow, Scotland, in 2016 whilst working as a Dental Core Trainee in Maxillofacial Surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. He currently works as an Academic Clinical Fellow Dental Core Trainee at Birmingham Dental Hospital, UK, where his research focusses on the degradation of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in periodontitis or health and barriers to the successful implementation of smoking cessation.

He is the lead author of peer-reviewed publications and has presented work at both national and international conferences.

Ana Poveda (co-coordinator)

Ana Poveda graduated in Dentistry by the University of Barcelona in 2002 and obtained her Masters of Science in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London in 2007.

Having successfully passed the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE) in Oral Medicine in 2016, she was elected Fellow Dental Specialist in Oral Medicine FDS (OM) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and appointed as Lecturer and Honorary Consultant. She is the Academic Lead in Oral Medicine in the School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham. (UK)

Dr Poveda has a broad experience in under- and postgraduate teaching in oral medicine at a national and international level, delivering regular lectures in the U.K and Spain, and also being a tutor for undergraduate students in her school. She is a regular speaker in conferences and congresses in the specialty of oral medicine.  Dr Ana Poveda is the new co-coordinator for this project, and joined the team in 2018. She will work alongside Rui Albuquerque on the coordination and development of this project.

Rui Albuquerque (Co-ordinator)

Dr. Albuquerque qualified in dentistry at the Instituto Superior de Ciencias da Saude do Sul, Portugal, in 2006. He then went on to undertake a Master’s degree in Oral Medicine and a PhD at the University of Barcelona, Spain.

He worked as a General Dental Practitioner (GDP) with a special interest in Oral Medicine in Portugal. On moving to England, he worked as a GDP in Eastbourne, as a Dental Officer in the Special Care Department in Brighton and Dartford/Lordswood and as Staff Grade in Oral Medicine at King’s College London. Since 2013 he has worked as an Academic Clinical Lecturer/Speciality Registrar in Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry/Birmingham Dental Hospital for the University of Birmingham.

He was responsible for writing the ERASMUS+ application and coordination of the project up to 2018, at which point Ana Poveda joined this project as co-coordinator

Jacobo Limeres Posse (Partner)
Jacobo Limeres Posse graduated in Dentistry at the Santiago de Compostela University (USC), gaining his PhD degree afterwards.

He was the Director of the Stomatology Department of the School of Medicine and Dentistry from 2014 to 2016 and currently he is vice Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Santiago de Compostela. He coordinates the “Program for Dental care of severely handicapped patients” developed in the Special Needs Unit of the USC in collaboration with the Galician Healthcare Service. He is also co-director of the Postgraduate course “Master in Dentistry for Medically compromised patients” at the USC. He was the President of the Spanish Society of Dentistry for Handicapped and Special Needs Patients (2013-2017). He has written more than 70 peer-reviewed papers and co-authored several books.

Márcio Diniz Freirtas (Partner)
Márcio Diniz Freitas graduated in Dentistry at the University Federal de Pelotas- Brazil, in 1999. Following this, he performed three years (1999-2002) of postgraduate training in Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral implantology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Spain.

In 2005 he obtained a PhD with the Oral Medicine Department of the University of Santiago de Compostela (“Oral squamous cell carcinoma: Assessment of clinical, histological and inmunohistochemical prognostic predictors”).

Since 2010, he has been a member of the research group “Oral Medical-Surgical Research Group” at USC. The main interests of this group center on research of Oral Cancer and precancer.

In 2013 he joined the University of Santiago de Compostela as Associate Professor of Oral Surgery. Currently, he is Associate Professor at the Special Needs Unit in the School of Dentistry (USC).

Alberto Pispero (Associate)
Alberto Pispero qualified in Dentistry in 2006 and specialized in Oral Surgery in 2009 at the Università degli Studi di Milano. He works as surgeon for the oral medicine service in the Dental School at the university hospital of Milano (Italy) and within private practice as a specialist in Oral Surgery and Implantology. He is Clinical Tutor in Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine at the Dental School of the Università degli Studi di Milano. He is author of articles and posters and has presented at national and international conferences.

Giovanni Lodi (Partner)
Giovanni Lodi qualified in Dentistry at the Università degli Studi di Milano in 1991. In 1998 he obtained his PhD from the University of London, and the same year he started to work for the oral medicine service of the dental clinic of the university hospital of Milano (Italy). In 2002 he joined the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Università degli Studi di Milano. He has published about 200 works in the field of oral medicine, evidence based dentistry and special needs.

He is currently

Jean-Cristophe Fricain - France - Partner

Jean-Cristophe Fricain (Partner)
JC FRICAIN is Doctor of Dental surgery from Bordeaux University (1992), PhD in Biology and Health, (1997), Research Director (2004), Specialist qualified in Oral Surgery (2011). He has been Associate Professor in oral pathology and surgery from 1997 to 2009 and Professor since 2009. He oversees oral bone and soft tissue pathology diagnosis and treatment in the Department of Oral Health at Bordeaux University Hospital, since 1997. He is responsible of oral-mucosal disease consultation in the dermatology department at the University Hospital in Bordeaux since 2000. He is the lead investigator of project INSERM U1026 which is focussed on bone and vascular tissue engineering. His teaching activities deal with oral oncology, oral pathology, bioengineering and bio-printing at dental and medical university.

He has supervised 10 Masters projects and 9 PhDs since 1998. He is a Member of the Executive Committee of the French Society for Oral Surgery and editor in chief of the Journal of Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine (Indexed via Scopus). He is author of 64 publications referenced in PubMed, 90 publications non referenced in PubMed, including textbooks, and more than 300 communications and lectures at dental and medical congresses alongside 3 international patents.

Sylvain Catros (Associate)
Dr Sylvain Catros graduated as a dentist in 2004 in Bordeaux, France where he subsequently took his internship in Oral Surgery. He also holds a PhD in Biomaterials focused on “Laser Assisted Bioprinting for Bone Tissue Engineering Applications”. Finally, he was a post-doctoral fellow at University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT, USA.

He is currently an Associate Professor in Oral Surgery at the University of Bordeaux Dental School, France. His clinical activities are focused in Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery.

Luis M. D. Martins da Silva
Luis holds a master’s degree in oral surgery and implantology and a diploma in implantology and forensic dentistry from the University of Toulouse III. Following this, he went on to obtain a DEA in Health Sciences from the University of Barcelona and a masters degree in sleep medicine from the University of Seville. He obtained his PhD from the Cooperativa De Ensino Superior Politécnico Universitário (CESPU) in 2016, which focussed on ‘Genetic Determinants Involved in the Pathophysiology of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.’

He holds numerous Directorship posts at CESPU and is an esteemed member on many professional societies focussing on dentistry and sleeping disorders. He is a renowned lecturer in physiology, invited to speak at many meetings to impart knowledge on sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders.

His work has been published multiple times in peer reviewed journals and he plays an active role in research, education and PhD supervision at CESPU.

Saman Warnakulasuriya is emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine and Experimental Pathology at King’s College London. He is the Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Cancer based in the UK. He is a global expert on the epidemiology and risk factors for oral cancer and has conducted demonstration studies on tobacco cessation both in primary care and in specialist clinics.

Dr. Raj Ariyaratnam is one of the trustees of the Manchester Global Foundation and he is the Lead for Global Oral Health Initiatives (GOH) at the School of Dentistry, University of Manchester. He is also the Academic Clinical Lead for Oral medicine teaching programme for undergraduate students at the University of Manchester in addition to being a practising Specialist in Oral Medicine both in Manchester and Birmingham. Dr. Ariyaratnam has approximately 40 years of Academic and Clinical experience both in United Kingdom and in Sri Lanka.

He has worked in primary, secondary and tertiary care sectors both in Sri Lanka and UK, initially graduated as a dentist and then specialised in Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine and also published scientific papers in International Journals in these areas. He is now the International Lead and Coordinator for that programme. To sustain that learning activity he also has recently set up a Global Online Teaching and Learning platform called GOLF (Global Online Learning Forum) with the support of UOM and CMFT. This project is now connected to Dentists in Sri Lanka and Kenya.

He is also the founder of DentMan GOHF (Global Oral Health Forum), which is a platform where Manchester Global Oral Health Practitioners (students, staffs, alumnae) can share their experiences of global volunteering with others to inspire future volunteers. This project is also supported by University of Manchester and Central Manchester Foundation Trust.
